Gregory Abdullah Mitchell – IRUSA Board Member
With more than 25 years of experience in nonprofit leadership, Gregory Abdullah Mitchell has worked with a variety of international and interfaith communities to facilitate better relationships between organizations, government bodies, and the media. Since 2021, Gregory Abdullah Mitchell has served on the board of Islamic Relief USA (IRUSA), a humanitarian organization that assists people in need around the globe who face life-threatening challenges. In this capacity, he has played a vital role in developing and expanding the various programs at IRUSA, including those focused on hunger relief, assistance to refugees, disaster response, clean water, education, and community health. IRUSA also has a strong microfinance initiative that provides small loans to local business owners who in turn pay back the money into a pool that provides further entrepreneurial support.
Alongside his work for Islamic Relief USA, Mitchell is the executive director of The Council of Islamic Organizations of Greater Chicago (CIOGC), a unifying body for Muslim community organizations located throughout Chicagoland. While these organizations are based in Illinois, many operate on a national level to meet the needs of Muslims across the country. Currently, CIOGC joins together 67 mosques, schools, and social service providers to challenge common misconceptions about Islam and to highlight the many contributions that Muslims have made to the United States. Mitchell remains especially engaged in efforts to expand programs for youth focused on leadership development, civic engagement, and academic achievement.
Gregory Abdullah Mitchell is a licensed attorney in Illinois who has provided legal services to many Muslim organizations over the course of his career. He sits on the boards of a Chicago mosque and other organizations in the area.
